Lesson Aim(s): To engage students with the idea of losing teeth and growing new ones as an example of growth and change. To model the use of picture graphs and data interpretation. To revise student knowledge about nutrition.

RS1.5 Reads a wider range of texts on less familiar topics with increasing independence and understanding, making connections between own knowledge and experience and information in texts.

·         Listens attentively during modelled reading and responds to questions to demonstrate comprehension

·         Discusses how teeth are lost and grown. Suggests some animals where teeth are different.

·         Identifies ways of helping to maintain healthy teeth

·         Contributes to class survey and collection of data

Modelled reading of Franklin and the Tooth Fairy. Oral comprehension questions throughout. After reading text, brief discussion about:

-          Some people believe in the tooth fairy. Other people have different ways of celebrating growing up.

-          Some animals don’t have teeth

-          Some animals have more teeth than humans

Discussion about why we have teeth and the names of the two types of teeth.

Explain that a survey is going to be conducted of the class to find out how many people have lost teeth, and how many teeth they have lost.

-          Use pictures of a tooth to show each person

Have student volunteers count the number of students for each point on the x axis (No. of Teeth Lost). Use blu-tac to stick the corresponding number of teeth in that column. Discussion and interpretation of graph results.

Students complete an independent worksheet which includes tasks:

- Completing a simplified version of the graph

- Interpreting the graph to identify the most common number of teeth lost

- Identifying teeth-friendly and teeth-non-friendly foods and drink.

- Cloze activity about strategies to keep your teeth healthy.
